It’s intended for photographers who need extra reach—such as wildlife, sports, and photojournalism—without the bulk of carrying longer native telephoto lenses.
Optically, the extender uses seven elements in three groups, with Canon’s Super Spectra coating applied to all surfaces to help reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast. A fluorine coating on the front and rear elements also makes it easier to clean fingerprints, dust, and moisture from the glass.
An integrated processor enables full communication between the lens and camera body, preserving autofocus, metering, and lens data transmission for accurate exposure and tracking performance. When paired with compatible L-series lenses, autofocus remains functional, though the maximum aperture is reduced by one stop due to the optical magnification.
The design includes a secure, easy-to-use mounting and release mechanism to speed up lens changes while minimizing exposure to dust and environmental conditions. The extender is also weather-sealed for resistance to dust and moisture, supporting reliable use in demanding outdoor environments.
Compatibility is limited to select Canon telephoto lenses, including L-series primes of 135mm and longer, as well as specific zooms such as the EF 70200mm f/2.8 and f/4 series and EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L.
