Optically, the lens incorporates two aspherical elements alongside Canon’s Super Spectra Coating to minimize spherical aberrations, flare, and ghosting. Autofocus is driven by a fast, near-silent lead screw-type STM stepping motor that provides smooth, quiet focus tracking suited for both stills and video work. For steady handheld shooting, the built-in Optical Image Stabilizer compensates for up to 4 stops of camera shake (or up to 6 stops of Coordinated IS when paired with an EOS R camera featuring In-Body Image Stabilization). A manual retractable barrel mechanism keeps the lens flush and highly portable for everyday bag carry.
