The Nikon Coolpix P90 is a superzoom bridge camera designed to give enthusiasts DSLR-like styling and handling paired with an extraordinary telephoto reach in a fixed-lens body. Released as an improved successor to the Coolpix P80, it’s aimed at travel and everyday photographers who want substantial zoom versatility without the size or cost of an interchangeable-lens system.

At the core of the P90 is a 12.1-megapixel CCD sensor paired with a Zoom-NIKKOR ED 24x optical zoom lens, covering an equivalent focal range of 26-624mm (35mm format) with a maximum aperture varying from f/2.8 at the wide end to f/5.0 at full telephoto. Nikon’s 4-Way VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization, using sensor-shift technology, helps counteract camera shake across the extensive zoom range, while Motion Detection automatically adjusts shutter speed and ISO to compensate for both camera shake and subject movement. ISO sensitivity ranges from 64 to 6400 equivalent.

The camera offers full PASM (Program, Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority, Manual) exposure modes alongside 15 scene modes, giving photographers flexibility between automated convenience and direct creative control. A Sports Continuous mode captures up to 45 frames at 2 megapixels at a rapid 15 frames per second, useful for tracking fast action. Focusing covers a normal range down to 50cm, extending to just 1cm in macro mode for extreme close-up work. Nikon’s Smart Portrait System automatically detects faces, triggers the shutter when a subject smiles, and warns the photographer if someone blinked.

Handling centers on a 3.0-inch, 230,000-dot vari-angle LCD monitor that tilts up to 90 degrees upward or 45 degrees downward for flexible shooting angles, along with a 230,000-dot electronic viewfinder for composing in bright conditions where the LCD can be harder to see. Images are stored on SD/SDHC memory cards or 47MB of built-in internal memory, and power comes from a proprietary EN-EL5 lithium-ion battery, rated for approximately 200 shots per charge (CIPA standard).
