This redesigned optical system delivers high-resolution, high-contrast imaging across the entire zoom range and frame area while more effectively correcting the chromatic aberrations that tend to occur toward the edges of the image, along with minimizing ghosting and flare. Canon’s Super Spectra coatings further improve color balance and contrast, while a fluorine coating on the front and rear elements helps resist dust, dirt, and fingerprints.
Autofocus is handled by a ring-type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) paired with a high-speed CPU and an optimized AF algorithm, delivering fast, silent, and highly responsive focusing, along with full-time manual focus override for fine-tuning focus at any time, even with AF engaged. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.38m consistently across the entire zoom range, yielding a maximum magnification of 0.21x at 70mm, giving photographers close-focusing versatility not always found in standard zooms of this class.
Build quality reflects a redesigned mechanical structure for enhanced reliability and durability, with a dust- and moisture-resistant structure at the mount, switch panel, and zoom ring. Compared to its predecessor, the lens is approximately 15% lighter, weighing 805g and measuring 113mm in length, while retaining a robust feel backed by a zoom ring lock lever to prevent accidental extension during transport. The lens accepts 82mm filters.
As a full-frame-compatible lens, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM produces its standard field of view (84°-34° diagonal angle of view) on full-frame Canon bodies and an effective 38-112mm equivalent field of view on APS-C bodies.
