At the core of the X half is a new, vertically oriented 1-inch back-illuminated 18MP CMOS sensor, the first 1-inch sensor used in Fujifilm’s X Series lineup, paired with a fixed FUJINON Aspherical 10.8mm f/2.8 prime lens (32mm full-frame equivalent). This combination produces 3:4 aspect ratio stills and video, mimicking the vertical orientation of half-frame film cameras, which exposed half a film frame to double the total picture count of a roll. Exposure control includes a +/-3 EV compensation dial and manual settings adjustable via the lens’s aperture ring and the rear touchscreen, working alongside Fujifilm’s celebrated Film Simulation modes (13 in total) and 26 filters, including eight borrowed from Fujifilm’s instax instant camera series, to produce expressive, film-like images.
A standout feature is the camera’s Film Camera mode, which recreates the experience of shooting an actual roll of film: photographers select a Film Simulation and a “roll” length of 36, 54, or 72 exposures, after which the rear LCD is disabled, composition happens only through the optical viewfinder, and a physical Frame Advance Lever must be pulled after each shot to advance to the next frame, just as with film. Once the “roll” is complete, images are “developed” through the FUJIFILM X half companion app. The camera also includes a unique 2-in-1 mode that automatically combines two sequential still images into a single composite, along with a Grain Effect for adding film-like texture and a Date Stamp function for imprinting dates onto images in the style of classic film photos.
Handling centers on dual rear displays: a vertical 3:4 touchscreen LCD for image review and Film Simulation selection, and a secondary sub-LCD for quick settings adjustment, along with an optical window viewfinder for composing in Film Camera mode. Notably, the X half is JPEG-only with no RAW capture option, reflecting its deliberately film-inspired, non-technical approach to photography. Video is recorded in a vertical 1080×1440 format. The camera uses an NP-W126S rechargeable battery, shared with several other X Series models, rated for up to 880 frames per charge, and stores images on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards (up to 2TB, UHS-I).
