The Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro is a compact, affordable telephoto zoom lens designed for Canon EF-mount full-frame and APS-C DSLR cameras, offering excellent cost performance for photographers wanting reach for portraits, sports, nature, and general telephoto photography. On Canon’s APS-C bodies, the effective focal range extends to approximately 112-480mm due to the crop factor.
Optically, the lens is built from 14 elements in 10 groups, including an SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element to help correct chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range. The DG lens design corrects for various aberrations and is specially coated to achieve good color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from a digital image sensor. A 9-blade diaphragm contributes to the lens’s background rendering.
A dedicated macro switch enables close-up photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm, delivering a maximum close-up magnification of 1:2 at the 300mm focal length (standard shooting outside macro mode yields a maximum magnification of approximately 1:4.1). Autofocus is driven by a micromotor rather than an internal ultrasonic or stepping motor, and the lens uses a rotary, extending zoom design, with the front element extending and rotating as it’s zoomed and focused.
Build quality is lightweight and compact, with a metal mount and plastic barrel construction, weighing approximately 530-550g and measuring roughly 76.6 x 122mm. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of approximately 1.5m in standard shooting (reduced in macro mode), and accepts a 58mm filter thread. It does not include image stabilization or weather sealing, and has no tripod collar.
As a full-frame-compatible DG-series lens, the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro is designed for use with both full-frame and APS-C Canon EF-mount digital SLR cameras, as well as 35mm film SLR bodies.
