Canon EOS RP Mirrorless Camera

NOTE: No exterior body screws, does not seem to affect functionality.

The Canon EOS RP Mirrorless Camera is Canon’s lightest and most compact full-frame camera, announced in 2019 as a more accessible entry point into Canon’s RF-mount mirrorless system. Impressively small despite its large full-frame sensor, it’s aimed at photographers who want a portable, travel-friendly body without sacrificing full-frame image quality.

At the core of the EOS RP is a 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor (35.9 x 24mm) paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 image processor, offering a native ISO range of 100-40000, expandable to 50-102400, suitable for a variety of lighting conditions in both stills and UHD 4K video. Autofocus uses a hybrid Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with 4,779 manually selectable focus points, covering approximately 100% vertical and 88% horizontal of the frame, with sensitivity down to -5 EV (with an f/1.2 lens). The system supports single-area, multi-area, face tracking, and Eye AF, along with touch-based AF point selection. Continuous shooting reaches up to 5fps without continuous tracking, or 4fps with full Servo AF.

The mechanical shutter offers a speed range of 30 seconds to 1/4000 second plus bulb mode, rated for 100,000 cycles, with metering options including evaluative, center-weighted, spot, and partial patterns. Video capability includes 4K recording (from a 1.7x cropped region of the sensor) at 24p, along with Full HD 1080p recording, and 8-bit 4:2:2 4K output is available externally via the HDMI port.

Handling centers on a 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offering 0.7x magnification, a 22mm eyepoint, -4 to +1 diopter adjustment, and a 60fps refresh rate, along with a fully articulating 3.0-inch, 1.04-million-dot touchscreen LCD for flexible stills and video framing. Twin command dials give direct access to exposure parameters. The camera does not include a built-in flash but features a hot shoe compatible with Canon’s E-TTL Speedlites, and Bluetooth-supported Wi-Fi allows for easy image transfer to a connected smartphone.

Build quality reflects the EOS RP’s compact positioning, measuring approximately 5.2 x 3.3 x 2.8 in. (133 x 85 x 70mm) and weighing just 440g (body only) or approximately 485g with battery and memory card. The camera does not include in-body image stabilization, relying instead on lens-based stabilization in compatible RF or adapted EF lenses. Power comes from an LP-E17 battery, rated for approximately 250 shots per charge (CIPA, Live View) or 210 shots (EVF). The EOS RP uses Canon’s RF lens mount, giving it access to Canon’s native RF lenses, along with EF and EF-S lenses via the official RF-EF mount adapter.
