The Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Lens for Canon EF is an all-in-one superzoom lens built specifically for APS-C-format Canon DSLR cameras, originally marketed as the world’s lightest, most compact 11x zoom lens made for digital SLR cameras at its release. Covering a substantial 18-200mm range, it delivers an approximately 28.8-320mm full-frame-equivalent field of view, giving photographers wide-angle through telephoto coverage in a single, convenient lens well suited to travel and everyday shooting.
Optically, the lens is built from 15 elements in 13 groups, including three hybrid aspherical elements, two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements, and one XR (Extra Refractive Index) element. The XR glass allows Tamron to compress the optical design and keep the lens physically compact despite its extensive zoom range, while the aspherical elements manage distortion throughout the zoom and the LD elements control chromatic aberration at the telephoto end. A 7-blade diaphragm rounds out the optical formula, with maximum aperture varying by focal length from f/3.5 at the wide end down to f/6.3 at 200mm.
Autofocus is driven by the camera body’s built-in focus motor (screw-type AF drive) rather than an internal ultrasonic or stepping motor in this EF-mount version, and Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) design provides a notably close minimum focusing distance of 0.45m (18 in.) maintained across the entire zoom range, yielding a maximum reproduction ratio of approximately 1:3.7 to 1:3.9. A zoom lock button on the barrel helps keep the lens fixed at 18mm during transport to prevent unwanted zoom creep.
Build quality is compact for its zoom range, measuring approximately 2.9 x 3.3 in. (73.8 x 83.7mm) and weighing approximately 14 oz. (398-423g), extending further when zoomed to 200mm. It accepts a 62mm filter thread and does not include image stabilization.
As an APS-C-specific lens, the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD is designed exclusively for Canon’s APS-C EF-S mount cameras and does not cover a full-frame image circle.
