The FUJIFILM X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) is a rangefinder-style mirrorless camera announced in September 2012 as the second model in Fujifilm’s X-mount system, following the X-Pro1. It’s a slimmed-down alternative to the X-Pro1, trading that camera’s hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder for a more streamlined, all-electronic design while retaining much of the same imaging core and classic manual-control handling.
At the core of the X-E1 is a 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor (23.6 x 15.6mm) using a unique non-Bayer color filter array that eliminates the need for an optical low-pass filter, paired with Fujifilm’s EXR Processor Pro for sharp, detailed images with reduced moiré. The sensor offers a native ISO range of 200-6400, expandable to 100-25600, and continuous shooting reaches up to 6fps. Autofocus uses a 49-point TTL contrast-detection system with single-area, multi-area, continuous, and tracking modes, along with manual focus override and an AF-assist illuminator.
Exposure control includes Programmed AE, Shutter-priority AE, Aperture-priority AE, and full Manual modes, with TTL 256-zone metering (Multi, Spot, and Average patterns) and exposure compensation adjustable from -2 to +2 EV. The mechanical shutter ranges from 30 seconds to 1/4000 second (1/4 second minimum in Program mode), extending to 60 minutes in Bulb mode. Video capability includes Full HD 1080p recording at 24fps, along with 720p at 24fps, saved as H.264 MOV files with stereo sound, limited to 29-minute clips.
Handling centers on a 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offering 100% frame coverage and 0.37x magnification, along with a fixed 2.8-inch, 460,000-dot LCD screen for image review and menu navigation. A built-in pop-up flash offers a guide number of 5m (ISO 100), with a 1/180 second flash sync speed and a standard hot shoe for external flash units. Fujifilm’s signature Film Simulation modes, along with bracketing and expanded dynamic range shooting, round out the camera’s creative toolset, and a microphone input supports external audio for video recording.
Build quality centers on a magnesium alloy top and front cover, giving the camera a durable, classic feel, though it is not weather-sealed. The camera measures approximately 129 x 75 x 38mm and weighs approximately 300g (body only, excluding battery and memory card), or about 350g with battery and card installed. It stores images on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and is powered by an NP-W126 rechargeable battery, rated for approximately 350 shots per charge (CIPA standard). The X-E1 uses Fujifilm’s X-mount lens system, giving it access to Fujifilm’s native XF lens lineup, and can also accept Leica M-mount lenses via an optional adapter.
