Nikon 1.5x Tele Converter TC-E15ED

The Nikon 1.5x Tele Converter TC-E15ED is a screw-on telephoto conversion lens designed to extend the effective focal length of select Nikon Coolpix digital cameras, specifically the Coolpix 5700 and 5400 models. Mounted in front of the camera’s built-in zoom lens, it maximizes the camera’s telephoto reach when the lens is extended all the way to its tele position, pushing the camera’s maximum focal length to an effective 420mm.

Optically, the converter is built from 4 elements in 2 groups, including an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element to help control chromatic aberration, and offers a viewing angle of approximately 5-6 degrees (14 degrees at its widest). It’s intended specifically to be used with the camera’s lens fully zoomed to telephoto, concentrating the converter’s optical design around that single use case rather than functioning across the full zoom range.

The converter requires a separately available adapter ring to mount to its compatible cameras: the UR-E8 adapter is needed for the Coolpix 5700, while the UR-E9 adapter is required for the Coolpix 5400. Once attached, many compatible Nikon Coolpix bodies allow the camera’s internal “Converter” menu setting to be switched to “Telephoto” mode, letting the camera automatically optimize its shooting parameters, such as autofocus and vibration reduction behavior, for use with the TC-E15ED attached.

Build quality is a compact, metal and glass construction with a rear filter thread of 50mm and a front filter thread of 58mm, with the rear glass element deeply recessed to allow a close, secure fit against the host camera’s lens barrel. The converter weighs approximately 9.7 oz. (235-275g) and measures approximately 2.4 x 2.9 in. (maximum extension length of approximately 3.11 in.).
