Rent NowThe Nikon 200mm f/4 NIKKOR-Q Auto is a vintage manual focus telephoto prime lens designed for Nikon F-mount film SLR cameras. Featuring a 200mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/4, this lens is well suited for portrait photography, outdoor events, nature photography, and general telephoto shooting. Its classic optical design and durable metal construction reflect Nikon’s early lens manufacturing standards.
The 200mm focal length provides a narrow field of view, allowing photographers to capture distant subjects and isolate details without physically moving closer. Its telephoto perspective creates noticeable background compression, making it particularly useful for portraits, wildlife, landscapes, and other situations where subject separation is desired.
With a maximum aperture of f/4, the lens provides flexibility for outdoor photography and shooting in available light. The telephoto focal length allows photographers to achieve a shallow depth of field, helping separate subjects from their backgrounds. Smaller aperture settings provide additional depth of field when greater overall sharpness is required.
The NIKKOR-Q Auto features a four-element optical design developed to provide sharpness and contrast for telephoto photography. Its traditional optical construction offers the rendering characteristics associated with early Nikon lenses, making it an option for photographers interested in vintage optics and classic photographic equipment.
A fully manual focusing system provides precise control through the mechanical focus ring. The dedicated aperture ring allows photographers to adjust exposure settings directly on the lens, while the automatic diaphragm mechanism allows compatible cameras to maintain a bright viewfinder image before stopping down to the selected aperture during exposure.
Constructed with a durable metal barrel, the lens features Nikon’s traditional mechanical design. Its solid construction, manual controls, and classic styling make it suitable for photographers who prefer a hands-on shooting experience. The lens also incorporates a built-in retractable hood to help reduce unwanted light and provide additional protection for the front element.
As a Non-AI lens, the NIKKOR-Q Auto uses Nikon’s original F-mount aperture coupling system and is primarily intended for compatible older Nikon film SLR cameras. Compatibility with newer Nikon DSLR bodies is limited, and mounting a Non-AI lens on an incompatible camera may cause mechanical damage. The lens may also be adapted to select modern mirrorless camera systems using an appropriate adapter.
The Nikon 200mm f/4 NIKKOR-Q Auto combines a traditional telephoto focal length, classic mechanical construction, and manual operation, making it an option for photographers interested in vintage Nikon equipment and film photography.
