Rent NowThe Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is a compact standard prime lens designed for Sony’s full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, offering a natural, classic focal length at an accessible price point. It’s a popular entry point into prime lenses for Sony shooters, well suited to portraiture, everyday shooting, and low-light photography.
Optically, the lens is built from 6 elements in 5 groups using a double-Gauss design, with one asymmetrical aspherical element to maintain sharpness and minimize aberrations. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture allows for solid subject separation and background blur, along with meaningfully improved low-light capability relative to a typical kit zoom. A 7-blade diaphragm contributes to the lens’s background rendering.
Autofocus is handled by a DC motor, delivering functional autofocus performance for stills and casual video, though it’s not Sony’s fastest or quietest focus system, a tradeoff reflecting the lens’s budget-friendly positioning. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m, yielding a maximum magnification of approximately 0.14-0.15x.
Build quality uses a metal mount paired with a predominantly plastic barrel, keeping the lens lightweight at approximately 186-192g, with no weather sealing. It accepts a 49mm filter thread and does not include image stabilization, relying on in-body stabilization on compatible Sony camera bodies.
As a full-frame E-mount lens, the FE 50mm f/1.8 delivers its full angle of view on Sony full-frame bodies while remaining compatible with Sony APS-C E-mount cameras at a narrower, 75mm-equivalent effective field of view.
