Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight

The Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight was Nikon’s flagship Creative Lighting System portable flash, engineered for use with both FX and DX-format D-SLRs as well as the COOLPIX P7000 and P7700 series cameras, offering unparalleled lighting performance in the field and in the studio. Among Nikon’s largest on-camera flash units, it brings excellent power, a wide range of features, and a Commander mode for wireless TTL control.

The flash offers a guide number of 111.5 ft. (34m) at ISO 100 and 35mm zoom, increasing to 157.5 ft. (48m) at ISO 200, with full compatibility for Nikon’s i-TTL (intelligent through-the-lens) metering for both on-camera and wireless flash control. An auto zoom head covers a 17-200mm range on FX-format cameras (12-200mm on DX), extendable to 12mm (FX) or 8mm (DX) using the built-in wide-angle diffusion panel, letting the flash head cover a broad range of lens focal lengths from 12mm all the way to 200mm. The flash head tilts from -7 to 90 degrees with click-stops at six positions and rotates a full 360 degrees (180 degrees in either direction) with click-stops at eight positions, giving photographers complete bounce and swivel flexibility.

Exposure control includes distance-priority manual flash, i-TTL Balanced Fill-Flash with CLS-compatible cameras, standard Manual flash mode (8 power levels), and non-TTL Auto Aperture mode, along with three selectable illumination patterns, Standard, Even, and Center-weighted, to shape light output for specific needs. Additional flash modes include slow sync, Auto FP high-speed sync (enabling shutter speeds up to 1/8000 second), first- and second-curtain sync, and a stroboscopic repeating flash mode adjustable from 1-100 Hz. Wireless capability lets the SB-910 function as a Commander for Advanced Wireless Lighting with other CLS-compatible flashes, or as a master unit in SU-4-type wireless multi-flash setups.

Handling centers on a backlit LCD panel with illuminated buttons for use in low light, a locking (flip-lock) hot shoe foot for secure mounting, AF-assist illumination for multi-point autofocus, a modeling illuminator, test firing and monitor pre-flash functions, flash value lock, flash color information communication, and 19 custom functions. The flash also includes improved thermal cut-out protection and firmware update capability through a compatible camera body. Power comes from 4 AA batteries or the optional SD-8A, SD-9, or SK-6 external battery packs, with a recycle time of approximately 2.3 seconds (NiMH) and a minimum of 110 flashes per set of AA batteries.

Build quality includes weather-sealed construction, measuring approximately 3.1 x 5.7 x 4.4 in. (78.5 x 145 x 113mm) and weighing approximately 415-522g. The flash ships with a Speedlight Stand (AS-21), Diffusion Dome (SW-13H), Fluorescent and Incandescent color filters, and a soft case.
