The H5 ships with Zoom’s XYH-5 interchangeable stereo microphone capsule, providing clear, phase-accurate capture in a classic 90-degree X/Y configuration for a tight stereo image, with shock-mounted mics to reduce handling noise and a design capable of handling up to 140dB SPL. The capsule system lets photographers and videographers swap input capsules as easily as changing a camera lens, with the recorder compatible with all Zoom input capsules for added versatility. Two XLR/TRS combo inputs provide dedicated mic/line connections, each with selectable phantom power and a -20dB pad, along with independent analog-style gain control knobs protected by “roll-bar” type covers to prevent accidental movement.
Recording capability includes up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution in BWF-compliant WAV format, or a variety of MP3 formats, with a maximum of 6 simultaneous monophonic (or up to 3 stereo) WAV files. Multi File mode allows simultaneous recording of the X/Y mic capsule and two external sources at once, useful for capturing both room sound and a stereo feed from a mixer. Built-in signal processing includes low-cut filtering, compression, and limiting, along with a chromatic tuner and metronome, Auto-record, Pre-record, and Backup-record functions (the latter simultaneously records a second, -12dB safety track to guard against unexpected audio spikes), and variable playback speed and pitch control without affecting one another.
Handling centers on a backlit LCD display (128 x 64 pixels), a built-in monophonic speaker (400mW, 8-ohm) for quick playback reference, and 3.5mm stereo mini-jack line and headphone outputs for simultaneously feeding a camera/DSLR and a pair of headphones, with a dedicated side-panel headphone volume control. The recorder also functions as a multichannel and stereo USB audio interface for PC, Mac, or iPad with loop-back functionality.
