The Nikon D70 DSLR Camera Body is a digital SLR built from the ground up by Nikon, designed for a broad range of photographers from experienced enthusiasts to beginners taking their first steps into digital SLR photography. Introduced in 2004, it was the first DSLR built by Nikon’s Thailand factory and offered tremendous value through a combination of advanced features and innovations at its release.
At the core of the D70 is a 6.1-effective-megapixel DX-format CCD sensor (23.7 x 15.6mm) with an RGB color filter, optimized to deliver a wide dynamic range and superbly sharp detail, producing images up to 3008 x 2000 pixels (with 2240 x 1488 and 1504 x 1000 resolution modes also available). An advanced LSI (Large Scale Integrated Circuit) processor ensures vivid color, accurate white balance, and minimized noise, with a native ISO range of 200-1600. Autofocus uses a high-speed, high-precision 5-area Multi-CAM900 AF system with predictive focus tracking and Lock-on, along with Multi-Segment, Center-Weighted, and Spot metering patterns.
Continuous shooting reaches 3fps, with Nikon’s Dynamic Buffer technology allowing up to 144 consecutive images to be captured at this rate. The shutter offers speeds from 30 seconds to 1/8000 second plus Bulb mode, with i-TTL flash compatibility and a notably fast flash sync speed of 1/500 second via the built-in pop-up flash (flash range of approximately 11m), supporting Auto, On, Off, Front-curtain, Rear-curtain, Red-Eye, and Slow Sync modes. Exclusive Digital Vari-Program scene modes and simultaneous compressed NEF (RAW) and JPEG writing capability round out the camera’s shooting flexibility.
Handling centers on an optical pentamirror viewfinder with approximately 95% coverage and 0.5x magnification, high magnification, diopter correction, complete information display, and On-Demand grid lines to aid composition, along with a fixed 1.8-inch LCD screen (130k dots) for image review and menu navigation; the D70 has no Live View or video recording capability.
Build quality centers on a plastic body measuring approximately 140 x 111 x 78mm and weighing approximately 679g, storing images on CompactFlash (Type I/II) cards, including Microdrive compatibility. The camera is powered by a Nikon EN-EL3 lithium-ion battery pack (with an optional MS-D70 holder for three CR2 lithium batteries, or the optional EH-5 AC adapter). The D70 uses Nikon’s F-mount lens system, compatible with D-AF, AF-S, DX, VR, and G Nikkor lenses, giving it access to Nikon’s extensive lens lineup.
