ILFORD Microphen is a fine-grain powder developer built to get the most speed
out of a film, which makes it a standard choice for push-processing. Most
speed-increasing developers coarsen the grain as they go; Microphen’s low
alkalinity keeps grain size down and stops it clumping, so you gain speed while
holding grain closer to what a normal developer would give. With many films it
supports pushing to EI 3200 — ILFORD HP5 Plus being the common example.
