OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera: Compact, Lightweight, Adventure-Ready
The OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera reasserts itself at the forefront of adventure-friendly cameras, building on the light footprint and high-resolution imaging standards OM System is renowned for. This second-generation model introduces significant improvements in comfort and convenience, making it an even more capable companion for any outdoor pursuit.
Key Innovations in the Mark II
USB-C Charging: A new USB-C port enables both power delivery and high-speed data transfer. This means you can charge the camera on the go using portable power banks (sold separately), ensuring all-day shooting in any environment.
Computational Photography Button: Located conveniently on the top plate next to the shutter release, this dedicated button provides direct access to a wide array of creative tools like High-Res Shot, Live ND, Focus Stacking, HDR, and Multiple Exposure modes, bypassing menu navigation.
New Shooting Modes:
Night Vision mode enhances details in dark scenes, clearly displaying both the night sky and foreground for simplified composition.
Hand Held Assist allows real-time assessment of stability for handheld long exposures.
New Video Color Profiles: Two new video color profiles, OM Cinema 1 & 2, are designed to help users achieve a cinematic look for their footage without requiring special post-processing or grading.
OM SYSTEM Menu: Carrying over from the OM-1 Mark II and OM-3, the OM-5 Mark II now features the company’s newest menu system, lauded for its intuitive organization and ease of understanding, even for first-time users.
Improved Grip: The OM-5 Mark II features a more pronounced handgrip, offering users a superior hold that benefits one-handed use.
Imaging Prowess & Rugged Design
The OM-5 Mark II retains the original’s acclaimed 20.4MP Live MOS sensor and TruePic IX image processor. Together, they deliver fast shooting performance, a sensitivity range up to ISO 25600, 4K video recording capabilities, and an impressive continuous shooting rate of up to 30 fps in Pro Capture mode. This mode allows you to half-press the shutter to begin capturing fast-moving subjects before the shutter is fully pressed, ensuring you don’t miss the decisive moment.
An advanced 121-point All Cross-Type Phase-Detection AF system combines both phase-detection and contrast-detection points for quick and accurate focusing. All 121 phase-detection points are cross-type, enhancing precision in mixed lighting and providing superior subject tracking. Diverse focusing modes are available, including Group Target 25-point mode for dynamic subjects like birds and wildlife, as well as Face and Eye subject detection, Starry Sky AF mode, and individual AF area settings for vertical and horizontal positions.
The camera incorporates 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization, which minimizes camera shake by up to 6.5 stops with any lens. This is particularly beneficial for telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures. When paired with select lenses featuring optical image stabilization, shake compensation up to an incredible 7.5 stops is possible. This robust system benefits both the High-Res Shot and Hand Held Assist modes, enabling sharp, incredibly detailed images even in low light.
Versatile Video Recording
The sensor and processor also support recording both DCI (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160) 4K movies. DCI 4K uses a true 24p frame rate, while UHD 4K is available in frame rates up to 30p. Audio recording is possible with the built-in stereo microphone, and an external mic jack is provided for enhanced audio quality. The camera supports limitless video recording (constrained only by storage and battery), features a Time-lapse Movie mode up to 4K UHD, and can function as a UVC/UAC web camera via USB-C. A red recording rectangle on the rear LCD and a red indicator lamp on the front clearly show when footage is being captured.
Expanded Creative Tools
In addition to Night Mode and Hand Held Assist, the OM-5 Mark II features a variety of creative shooting modes:
Live ND 16 mode: Simulates a neutral density filter, combining multiple exposures into a single image to replicate a photo taken at slower shutter speeds, ideal for blurring moving water and clouds.
Focus Stacking mode: Records multiple sequential frames and composites them into a single image with extended depth of field.
High-Res Shot mode: Offers the equivalent output of a 50MP image in handheld mode, and an impressive 80MP image when using a tripod.
Live Composite mode: Gradually builds up an exposure over time without overexposing key elements, perfect for long exposures, nighttime shooting, and light painting.
Vertical Video mode: Provides a 9:16 aspect ratio for easy integration of videos on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Built for the Elements & Seamless Connectivity
Designed for durability, the OM-5 Mark II boasts an IP53 rating, offering superior weather protection. Its tough construction makes it freezeproof, dust- and splash-resistant, and fully operable at temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C).
The camera’s body features a high-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) for clear, distortion-free eye-level monitoring. The rear 3.0-inch 1.04m-dot LCD monitor has a vari-angle design for working from diverse angles and is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation and image playback. The included BLS-50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 310 shots per charge. A single UHS-II compatible SD memory card slot ensures fast read/write speeds.
For wide accessory compatibility, the OM-5 Mark II includes a microphone port, a top hot shoe, micro-USB and micro-HDMI ports, and a 2.5mm port for optional remotes. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permit wireless image sharing and remote camera control from a linked smartphone or tablet.
