Released in 2007, it became the new standard for professional and serious amateur photographers needing a fast, ultra-wide zoom, well suited to weddings, photojournalism, architecture, interiors, and landscapes.
Optically, the lens covers a 16-35mm focal range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom, and its 16-element, 12-group optical construction incorporates three different types of aspherical lens elements and two UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements, achieving an even higher level of image quality than its predecessor by favorably correcting various aberrations, particularly improving peripheral image quality at the wide-angle end. A 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm contributes to pleasing background bokeh and distinctive sunstars when stopped down.
Autofocus is handled by a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), delivering fast, quiet focusing performance along with full-time manual focus available once the subject comes into focus in One-Shot AF mode; the AF ring operates mechanically rather than by-wire. The lens uses a “quasi-internal” zoom design: the overall length of the lens never changes as it zooms, though the front element moves inside the barrel. The lens does not include image stabilization, a tradeoff consistent with its design era.
As an L-series lens, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM features water- and dust-resistant construction at the lens mount, switch panel, zoom ring, and focusing ring, making it well suited to professional use in demanding outdoor conditions. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m (0.92 ft.), yielding a maximum magnification of 0.22x (at 35mm), and accepts an 82mm filter thread, a notably large size that was a first for Canon EF lenses at the time of its release. It measures approximately 88.5 x 111.6mm and weighs approximately 640g. The lens is not compatible with Canon’s EF1.4X II or EF2X II extenders.
As a full-frame-compatible lens, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM produces its full ultra-wide angle of view on full-frame Canon bodies and an effective 26-56mm equivalent field of view on APS-C (1.6x crop) bodies.
