Canon’s next-generation Optical Image Stabilizer, combined with an optimized AF algorithm, provides image stabilization equivalent to approximately four shutter-speed stops, a one-stop improvement over the original IS version. Autofocus is handled by a ring-type USM motor with an inner focusing system, delivering fast, quiet performance along with full-time manual focus override via a notably enlarged, rubberized focus ring that rotates smoothly across 137 degrees. The lens does not extend during zooming or focusing, maintaining consistent balance and length in use.
Build quality reflects the lens’s flagship L-series positioning, with a sturdy, all-metal body that is fully weather-sealed against dust and moisture, holding up reliably to the rigors of professional use. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m (3.9 ft.) at all zoom settings, yielding a maximum magnification of 0.21x at 200mm, useful for photographers working in smaller spaces who need to get closer to a subject.
