The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens designed specifically for Canon APS-C EF-S mount DSLR cameras, engineered from the ground up for digital sensors rather than adapted from a full-frame optical design. It’s aimed at landscape, architecture, interior, and real estate photographers who want dramatic wide-angle coverage well suited to a Canon crop-sensor body.
Optically, the lens covers a 10-22mm focal range with a variable maximum aperture of f/3.5 at the wide end narrowing to f/4.5 at full telephoto. On Canon’s APS-C sensor, this range delivers a 16-35.2mm full-frame-equivalent field of view, giving photographers true ultra-wide coverage that helps recover the wide-angle capability often lost when using standard lenses on a crop-sensor body. The optical design incorporates one Super-UD (ultra-low dispersion) element and three aspherical elements to control chromatic and spherical aberrations, along with Canon’s Super Spectra coating to limit flare and ghosting for improved contrast.
Autofocus is handled by a ring-type USM motor, delivering fast, quiet autofocus along with full-time manual focus override achieved simply by turning the focus ring. The lens uses an internal focusing design, meaning the front element does not rotate and the overall lens length stays constant during focusing or zooming, keeping the lens convenient to use with filters such as polarizers. A circular aperture design helps produce natural-looking highlights even when stopped down by two stops.
A notable strength of this lens is its close focusing distance of just 9.5 inches (0.24m), yielding a maximum magnification of 0.17x at 22mm, allowing photographers to fill the frame with small subjects while still working at ultra-wide focal lengths. Build quality is relatively compact and lightweight for an ultra-wide zoom, weighing approximately 385g and measuring 83.5 x 89.8mm, and the lens accepts 77mm filters, allowing filter sharing with several of Canon’s L-series zooms. It does not include image stabilization, and is not compatible with Canon’s EF 1.4x or 2x extenders.
The lens is compatible exclusively with Canon’s APS-C EF-S mount cameras and cannot be used on full-frame EF-mount bodies.
