The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is a standard zoom lens designed exclusively for APS-C Canon EF-S mount cameras, covering a versatile wide-to-telephoto range suited to everyday, travel, and general-purpose photography. On APS-C bodies the lens produces an equivalent focal length of approximately 27-136mm. The variable aperture ranges from f/4 at the wide end to f/5.6 at full telephoto extension. Image Stabilizer technology provides shake correction for handheld shooting across the zoom range, and autofocus is driven by a ring-type USM motor for fast, quiet performance with full-time manual override. The optical design includes one UD lens element and an aspherical element to help control chromatic aberration and distortion. As an EF-S lens, it is compatible exclusively with APS-C Canon DSLR bodies and is not compatible with full-frame EF-mount cameras.
