The Canon EOS Rebel XS (also known as the EOS 500 in Europe and the EOS Kiss in Japan) is a compact, lightweight 35mm autofocus film SLR released in 1993, the third generation of Canon’s Rebel lineup. At launch, its roof-mirror (porroprism) eye-level viewfinder design made it the world’s smallest and lightest 35mm AF SLR, and it’s aimed at entry-level and casual photographers who want an easy-to-use film camera with genuine EOS-system flexibility.
The camera offers autofocus with manual override, AF lock, and an AF auxiliary light, along with a 3-point Multi-Wide Autofocus system that links focus points to the metering pattern. Exposure options include full manual metering, shutter-priority AE, aperture-priority AE, and Programmed AE, along with four Programmed Image Control modes for scene-specific automation and a Green Zone quick-control dial for simplified full-auto shooting. Metering uses a 6-zone evaluative pattern, along with center-weighted averaging and 9.5% partial metering of the central image area, with settings shown via an LCD display both in the viewfinder and on the top panel.
The vertical-travel, focal-plane electronic shutter ranges from 30 seconds to 1/2000 second plus bulb mode, with flash sync at 1/90 second via the dedicated hot shoe. A built-in pop-up flash offers TTL autoflash metering, a guide number of 39, coverage suited to 28mm lenses, and red-eye reduction. Film speed is read automatically via DX coding across an ISO range of 25-5000, with manual override extending from ISO 6-6400. A built-in motor handles automatic film advance using a prewind system (the full roll winds onto the take-up spool at loading, with each exposed frame rewinding back into the cartridge as it’s shot) along with automatic rewind, mid-roll rewind capability, and multiple-exposure capability. A built-in electronic self-timer with an audible beeper is also included.
Build quality reflects the Rebel XS’s lightweight, compact design, achieved partly through the use of a hollow roof (porro) prism rather than a solid pentaprism, trading some viewfinder brightness for reduced weight. The camera uses Canon’s EF lens mount, giving it access to Canon’s full range of EF lenses, including modern L-series optics, since EOS film and digital bodies share the same lens mount.
