It’s the long-awaited successor to the popular SX60 HS, aimed at travel and wildlife photographers who want versatility spanning macro through extreme telephoto in a single, relatively compact camera.
At the core of the SX70 HS is a 20.3MP BSI-CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 image processor, delivering a meaningful resolution jump over its predecessor along with an ISO range of 100-3200. The standout feature is its 65x optical zoom lens covering a 21-1365mm (35mm equivalent) focal range, extendable to 2730mm equivalent using Canon’s improved ZoomPlus digital zoom technology while maintaining image clarity. Dual Sensing IS provides optical image stabilization rated to correct for up to 5 stops of camera shake (CIPA standard), particularly valuable at the lens’s extreme telephoto reach where handheld shake is magnified substantially. The camera can also focus as close as 1cm in macro mode.
Continuous shooting reaches up to approximately 10fps with one-shot AF, or about 5.7fps with continuous servo AF and AE engaged, a notable improvement over the SX60 HS’s 6.5fps. Video capability includes 4K UHD recording (with a tighter crop applied in 4K mode) along with 4K time-lapse video, from which high-resolution still frames can be extracted, and Full HD recording at up to 60p.
Handling centers on a substantially upgraded 0.39-inch, approximately 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, offering classic DSLR-style ergonomics along with a redesigned grip and button layout compared to its predecessor. The camera retains a fully articulating 3-inch, 922K-dot LCD screen that can fold and face in multiple directions, including forward for selfies, or fold back against the body for protection when not in use. Both JPEG and Canon CR3 RAW file formats are supported, including a new Compact RAW option.
