Optically, the lens is built from 9 elements in 6 groups, including two aspherical elements to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for greater sharpness and accurate rendering. Fujifilm’s Super EBC coating controls flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity in bright and backlit conditions, and a rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces smooth, pleasing out-of-focus rendering even at the lens’s maximum f/2 aperture.

Autofocus is handled by a stepping motor driving an internal focus design, delivering fast, quiet autofocus performance well suited to both stills and video work. A traditional aperture ring on the barrel, adjustable in 1/3-stop increments from f/2 to f/16, gives photographers direct, tactile exposure control, consistent with Fujifilm’s manual-control-oriented design philosophy.
