The Hitachi VM-2800A is a compact VHS-C camcorder from Hitachi’s consumer camcorder lineup, part of a series alongside the VM-1800A and VM-3800A, aimed at home users capturing family memories, vacations, and everyday moments during the VHS-C era of consumer video recording. VHS-C tapes could be played directly in a compatible VHS VCR using an adapter, making the format especially convenient for sharing footage without a separate camcorder-to-VCR dubbing step.
The camcorder uses a solid-state CCD image pickup device, standard imaging technology for consumer camcorders of its era, and includes a built-in camera light for shooting in dark environments, with an “Auto” setting that turns the light on and off automatically based on ambient brightness. The color viewfinder includes adjustable Bright, Color, and Tint controls, letting users fine-tune the eyepiece display without affecting the actual recorded footage.
Handling includes automatic film rewind, an eyepiece adjustment for individual users, and compatibility with optional tele or wide-angle converter lenses that attach to the front of the built-in lens for added framing flexibility. A flying erase head is included, helping produce cleaner, glitch-free edit points when recording over previously used tape sections. The camcorder can also be powered via an optional car battery cord accessory for use away from home power.
