The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G is a fast, fixed-focal-length standard prime lens designed for Nikon F-mount cameras, introduced in 2008 as a comprehensive optical replacement for the older AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D. It’s well suited to portraiture and low-light candid photography, pairing a normal picture angle with an especially bright maximum aperture.
Optically, the lens offers a 50mm focal length (46° angle of view on FX/full-frame bodies, equivalent to 75mm on Nikon’s DX format) with a maximum aperture of f/1.4. The 8-element, 7-group optical design was newly developed to more effectively correct sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberration, improving performance toward the edges of the frame, particularly at large apertures, compared to its predecessor. Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating helps reduce lens flare and ghosting even when shooting toward light sources, and a rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces smooth, natural-looking bokeh rather than the more angular shapes of the older 7-blade design.
Autofocus is handled by Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM, denoted “AF-S”), delivering smooth, near-silent autofocus and full compatibility with Nikon’s entry-level DSLR bodies lacking an in-camera focus motor. Two focus modes are available: M/A (manual-priority autofocus) and full manual focus (M), with the focus ring remaining stationary (not rotating) during AF operation. Although all internal lens groups shift during focusing, the overall lens barrel length does not change, and the front element neither extends nor rotates, making it convenient to use with circular polarizing filters.
Build quality includes a closest focusing distance of 0.45m (1.5 ft.), yielding a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.15x, and a 58mm filter thread. The lens measures approximately 73.5 x 54.2mm and weighs approximately 280g, and does not include image stabilization.
As an FX-format lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G delivers its full angle of view on Nikon full-frame F-mount bodies while remaining compatible with Nikon DX-format APS-C cameras at an effective 75mm equivalent focal length.
