The Nikon SB-21 is a dedicated macro speedlight flash system designed for close-up and macro photography with compatible Nikon SLR and DSLR cameras. It features a ring-style flash head that mounts directly to the front of the lens via an adapter ring, positioning the light source close to and around the lens axis for even, shadow-free illumination of close-up subjects that would be difficult to light effectively with a conventional off-axis flash. Two independently controllable flash tubes allow the ratio of light between the left and right sides to be adjusted, providing some degree of directional lighting control for adding dimensionality and texture to close-up subjects when desired. TTL automatic flash exposure metering maintains communication with compatible Nikon camera bodies for consistent exposures, and a modeling light assists with previewing the lighting effect before shooting.
