Rent NowThe Rokinon 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS is a fast manual-focus cine prime lens designed for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and camcorders, part of Rokinon’s DS series of cinema lenses built specifically for video and cinema production. It’s aimed at independent filmmakers and videographers who want a normal-range focal length with cine-style handling at a budget-friendly price relative to premium cinema optics.
Optically, the lens is compatible with both APS-C and full-frame E-mount cameras, delivering a full-frame equivalent focal length of 75mm when used with APS-C sensors. It provides a very fast maximum aperture of T1.5 for effective low light capture and shallow depth of field control and an 8 blade iris for attractive bokeh. The optical design is composed of 9 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element and one hybrid aspherical element to reduce aberrations, along with a lens multi-coating (UMC) to improve light transmission and reduce flare and ghosting.
As a cine lens, the focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, providing an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been de-clicked, enabling smooth iris pulls free of the audible clicks and visible exposure jumps a photo-lens aperture ring would introduce mid-shot. Bright aperture and distance markings are printed on the lens barrel facing laterally to facilitate easier control by a focus puller, and focusing scales are marked on both sides of the lens barrel, facilitating adjustments from either side of the camera.
As part of the DS series, this lens shares consistent alignment of geared focus and aperture rings with other DS lenses, allowing for seamless transitions between lenses without needing to re-adjust follow focus and other rig accessories, and each DS lens undergoes testing to ensure color matching for uniform color and contrast across the series during video recording. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 1.5′, with internal focusing that minimizes the effects of lens breathing, and accepts a 77mm filter thread. As a fully manual lens, it provides no electronic communication with the camera.
