At the core of the a7R V is a 61MP full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the same sensor found in its predecessor, now paired with Sony’s BIONZ XR processor along with a second, dedicated AI processor used solely for subject recognition and autofocus/exposure calculations in both stills and video. This combination delivers a native ISO range of 100-32000 (expandable to 50-102400), along with continuous shooting at up to 10fps with full autofocus, supporting up to 583 consecutive compressed RAW frames or over 1,000 consecutive JPEGs in mechanical shutter mode. Autofocus is handled by a 693-point phase-detect AF system with real-time tracking, and a new auto-exposure algorithm detects skin area on faces to more accurately balance exposure for portraits, even in backlit conditions or when the subject isn’t facing the camera directly.
In-body image stabilization is rated for up to 8 stops of correction, a notable jump from the 5.5 stops of the a7R IV, thanks to new gyro sensors and additional processing power. The camera also offers full-size lossless compressed RAW along with new medium and small RAW file size options, all derived from the sensor’s full resolution rather than pixel-binned or line-skipped, and multi-shot high-resolution composites can be merged in Sony’s Imaging Edge software suite.
Video capability includes 8K recording at 24/25p from a 1.24x cropped area of the sensor, along with 4K recording at up to 60p, and oversampled 4K up to 30p using either the full sensor width or a Super35mm crop.
