The Sony Alpha a7R II Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) is a high-resolution full-frame mirrorless camera, the fifth in Sony’s a7-series lineup and second high-resolution “R” model, built around the world’s first back-illuminated (BSI) full-frame sensor. It’s aimed at photographers who want maximum resolution combined with genuine speed, strong autofocus, and robust 4K video capability.
At the core of the a7R II is a 42.4MP full-frame Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor (35.9 x 24mm) with no optical low-pass filter, paired with Sony’s BIONZ X image processor, offering a native ISO range of 100-25600, expandable to 50-102400. The back-illuminated sensor design delivers improved light-gathering efficiency and sensitivity compared to a conventional front-illuminated sensor. Autofocus uses a totally revamped hybrid system combining 399 on-sensor phase-detection points with 25 contrast-detection points, delivering notably faster, more reliable focus acquisition, up to 40% faster than its predecessor, with sensitivity down to -2 EV. Continuous shooting reaches up to 5fps.
A standout feature is 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE in-body image stabilization, downgrading to 3-axis when using non-native, adapted lenses. Sony addressed the shutter-shock issues of the original a7R by reducing shutter noise and vibration, along with introducing an electronic front-curtain shutter option that largely eliminates shutter-related blur, with the mechanical shutter offering speeds from 1/8000 to 30 seconds.
Video capability includes internal UHD 4K recording at up to 30p, from either the full sensor width or a Super 35mm crop region, along with Full HD recording at up to 60fps and HD 720p at up to 120fps for slow motion. S-Log2 Gamma and S-Gamut settings, along with fully customizable picture profiles, give videographers substantial dynamic range and post-production grading flexibility, with Sony citing performance similar to the video-focused a7S in S-Log shooting.
Handling centers on a 0.5-inch, 2.36-million-dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder offering 100% coverage and 0.78x magnification, notably higher than the EVF magnification found on many competing high-end DSLRs, along with a 3.0-inch, 1,228,800-dot tilting LCD monitor (tilts up and down, not side to side). Metering includes Center-Weighted Average, Multi-Zone, and Spot patterns across a -3 to 20 EV range.
Build quality includes a full magnesium alloy, weather-sealed body, measuring approximately 127 x 96 x 60mm and weighing approximately 625-627g with battery and card. The camera stores images on SD/SDHC/SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards, and includes built-in Wi-Fi with NFC for wireless image transfer and remote control. Power comes from an NP-FW50 battery (two included), rated for approximately 340 shots per charge (CIPA, LCD) or 290 shots (EVF). The a7R II uses Sony’s E-mount lens system, giving it access to Sony’s full range of native full-frame and APS-C E-mount lenses.
