The Sony a6100 is an APS-C mirrorless camera aimed at photographers and content creators who want fast, class-leading autofocus and solid 4K video capability in a compact, affordable body. Positioned as a step up from the long-running a6000, it brings much of the core imaging technology from Sony’s higher-end a6600 down to a more accessible price point.
At the core of the a6100 is a 24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor paired with Sony’s BIONZ X image processor, the same combination found in Sony’s a6600 flagship, delivering an ISO range of 100-32000 (expandable to 51200) for confident shooting in dimmer conditions. Sony’s 4D FOCUS system uses 425 phase-detection points covering nearly the entire sensor area, paired with real-time Eye AF and real-time subject tracking for reliably fast, accurate autofocus on both people and animals. Continuous shooting reaches up to 11fps, and the camera offers dual control dials for direct access to most exposure parameters.
Video capability includes UHD 4K recording at 30p along with Full HD recording at up to 120p, though the camera does not support Log recording formats, somewhat limiting dynamic range flexibility for video colorists. Handling centers on an SVGA Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder (1.44 million dots, 0.70x magnification, 100% coverage) along with a 3.0-inch, 921.6k-dot touchscreen LCD that tilts 180 degrees upward or 74 degrees downward for flexible high- and low-angle shooting and vlogging-style framing; the screen also uses White Magic (RGBW) technology for improved visibility in bright daylight.
Build quality reflects the a6100’s more budget-conscious positioning within the a6000 series, using a composite plastic body rather than the weather-sealed magnesium alloy construction of the a6600, and notably, the camera does not include in-body image stabilization, relying instead on optically stabilized lenses for shake correction. It includes a 3.5mm microphone input (no headphone jack), and can be powered or charged via USB in addition to its battery. The a6100 uses Sony’s E-mount lens system, giving it access to Sony’s full range of native APS-C and full-frame E-mount lenses. Connectivity includes built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC for wireless image transfer and remote camera control via Sony’s companion app.
