The Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is a general-purpose standard zoom lens designed for Canon EF-mount full-frame cameras, offering a more affordable, lighter-weight alternative to Canon’s L-series 24-105mm f/4 zooms. Introduced in 2014, it covers a 4.4x zoom range handling everything from wide interiors to medium telephoto framing, and while it lacks the L-badge, constant aperture, and weather sealing of its pricier siblings, it was the first Canon EF standard zoom for full-frame cameras to include a stepping motor (STM) autofocus system.
Optically, the lens covers a 24-105mm focal range with a variable maximum aperture of f/3.5 at the wide end narrowing to f/5.6 at full telephoto, a tradeoff that keeps the price and weight down compared to a constant-aperture design. The 17-element, 13-group optical construction includes one UD (ultra-low dispersion) element and two aspherical elements, and Canon’s design is intended to minimize ghosting and flare, though this is not achieved through a named proprietary coating. A 7-blade diaphragm produces a circular aperture for smooth, soft bokeh.
Autofocus is handled by a lead screw-type stepping motor (STM), delivering smooth and quiet focusing and tracking well suited to shooting movies as well as stills, with autofocus generally fast and reasonably quick, particularly in Live View. The lens’s Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to four stops of shake correction, helping photographers capture shake-free shots at shutter speeds as slow as 1/8 second when fully zoomed to 105mm.
Build quality uses high-quality plastics paired with a metal lens mount, consistent with most of Canon’s mid-range optics, keeping the lens notably lightweight for a full-frame-compatible zoom at approximately 525g. It uses a rotary (extending) zoom design, with the barrel lengthening as the lens zooms, and focuses as close as 0.4m (1.31 ft.), yielding a maximum magnification of 0.3x at 105mm. The lens accepts 77mm filters, the same size used across much of Canon’s L-series lineup, and measures approximately 83mm in diameter by 104mm in length.
As a full-frame-compatible lens, the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM produces its 24-105mm field of view on full-frame Canon bodies and an effective 38-168mm equivalent range on APS-C bodies.
