Optically, the lens is built from 15 elements in 11 groups, including five SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements, one aspherical element, and the latest high refractive index glass, working together to thoroughly correct aberrations that camera-side corrections can’t handle. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to help produce sharp, high-contrast images even in backlit conditions. The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture enables strong low-light performance and pronounced control over depth of field, while a rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth, pleasing bokeh.
Autofocus is handled by a stepping motor optimized for both phase-detection and contrast-detection AF, delivering fast, near-silent focusing for both stills and video, including smooth face/eye-detection tracking unique to mirrorless systems; this mirrorless-native design also lets the lens body be significantly smaller than its DSLR-mount predecessor.
