Optically, the lens is built from 12 elements in 11 groups, combining spherical and aspherical elements to deliver high resolution right out to the image edges while precisely controlling spherical aberration. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture is uncommon for a lens this wide, enabling strong subject separation and shallow depth of field even at an ultra-wide focal length, and a rounded 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm contributes significantly to the lens’s smooth, naturally rendered bokeh.

Autofocus is handled by two linear stepping motors, delivering notably fast, precise autofocus and tracking performance for both stills and video, along with smooth, virtually silent focus transitions well suited to movie recording; the lens design also suppresses focus breathing and reduces angle-of-view shifts during focusing. An AF/MF switch allows quick toggling to manual focus, and a customizable focus hold button is included for direct, convenient control. Minimum focus distance is approximately 0.15m (5.9 in.) in autofocus mode, tightening to about 0.12m (4.7 in.) in manual focus, yielding a maximum magnification of roughly 0.13x (AF) or 0.2x (MF).

Build quality centers on a remarkably compact, lightweight barrel measuring approximately 66 x 57.5mm and weighing just 181g (6.4 oz.), making it an easy, unobtrusive lens to carry for walkaround and travel use. Despite its ultra-wide design, the lens accepts standard 55mm threaded front filters, a notably rare feature at this focal length. It does not include optical image stabilization, relying instead on in-body stabilization on compatible camera bodies.
