The Canon Selphy CP720 Compact Photo Printer is a portable dye-sublimation photo printer designed to let users enjoy at-home photo printing with results that rival a professional photo lab, taking just 73 seconds to create wide-size (4″ x 8″) prints, 58 seconds for postcard-size (4″ x 6″) prints, or 31 seconds for credit-card-size prints.

The printer uses 300 x 300 dpi dye-sublimation thermal transfer technology with an overcoating pass, rendering 256 gradations (levels) per color across Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta inks for richly detailed, true-to-life skin tones, shading, and fine detail. A transparent, water- and fade-resistant coating is applied over each finished print to help protect it against sunlight and humidity for longer-lasting results. Print sizes include postcard (4″ x 6″), L-size (3.5″ x 4.7″), card size, and wide size (4″ x 8″), available in both borderless and bordered formats.

The front panel includes three memory card slots compatible with a wide range of formats, including CompactFlash (Type I), SD, SDHC, xD-Picture Card, MiniSD, MultiMediaCard, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, and Memory Stick PRO, letting users print directly from a card without a computer. A retractable, 12-inch USB cable on the front connects directly to a PictBridge-compliant digital camera for direct printing, while a separate USB-B port on the back connects the printer to a computer for use with included software such as ZoomBrowser EX, Easy-PhotoPrint, ImageBrowser, PhotoStitch, and EOS Utility (available for both Windows and Macintosh).

Handling centers on a 1.5-inch color LCD display on top of the unit, letting users preview, select, and navigate through images directly on the printer before printing, along with physical control buttons. Canon’s PhotoRecord software (Windows only) includes a range of pre-designed templates for creating photo greeting cards, holiday cards, thank-you cards, and more.

Build quality centers on a compact body measuring approximately 7.01 x 2.48 x 4.92 in. (178 x 125 x 63mm) and weighing approximately 2.05 lb. (32.8 oz.), available primarily in white. The printer uses a dedicated ink cassette (Y/M/C plus overcoating) paired with matching photo paper, with starter supplies for 5 postcard-sized prints typically included.
