Completing Sigma’s trio of fast f/1.4 primes (following the 16mm and 30mm) for crop-sensor mirrorless systems, it’s well suited to portrait, street, pet, event, and candid photography.
Optically, the lens is characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, well suited to difficult lighting conditions while also offering improved control over depth of field for isolating subjects using selective-focus techniques. The 10-element, 6-group optical design includes one SLD (Super Low-Dispersion) element and two aspherical elements, reducing both spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating combats flare and ghosting for contrasty, color-neutral images, and a rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth, pleasing bokeh.
Autofocus is handled by a stepping motor paired with an inner-focusing design, delivering fast, smooth, and nearly silent operation well suited to both stills and video, with full compatibility for Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system, including precise face-recognition and Eye AF tracking as a subject moves during a shoot.
