Released as an improved successor to the earlier XF 35mm f/1.4 R, it offers substantially sharper rendering, especially at wide apertures, in a lens well suited to weddings, events, portraiture, and everyday standard-prime shooting.

Optically, the lens is built from 15 elements in 10 groups, including two aspherical elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements, reducing distortion, spherical aberration, flare, and ghosting for high sharpness and accurate color rendering across the frame. Fujifilm’s Nano-GI and Super EBC coatings further suppress reflections for improved contrast, and a rounded 9-blade diaphragm delivers smooth, pleasing bokeh. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well suited to low-light shooting and offers strong control over depth of field for selective focus.

Autofocus is handled by a Linear Motor (LM), a notably faster and quieter system than the older AF motor used in the previous XF 35mm f/1.4 R, with the focusing group placed mid-lens and moved via internal focusing, so the lens’s physical length doesn’t change during use. A traditional aperture ring with an “A” (Auto) lock position allows direct exposure adjustment on the barrel, consistent with Fujifilm’s manual-control-oriented design philosophy, though it cannot be de-clicked.

Build quality centers on an all-metal construction, including the barrel, focus ring, aperture ring, and lens mount, along with weather-resistant (WR) sealing and freeze-proof performance down to -10°C (14°F). The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.3m (11.8 in.), yielding a maximum magnification of 0.15x, and accepts a 58mm filter thread. It measures approximately 67mm in diameter by 73.5mm in length and weighs approximately 360g, and ships with a barrel-shaped lens hood (also compatible with the optional square-shaped LH-XF23-2 hood).
