Ilford Ilfostop is a low-odor acid stop bath, an essential component in the photographic development process. Typically, after the development stage is complete, both films and photographic papers undergo a stop bath rinse. This crucial step promptly halts the development process by neutralizing the effects of the developer.
Following the stop bath, the film or print is immersed in a fixer solution (hypo). The key advantage of employing a stop bath is its ability to extend the life of the fixer solution. Without a stop bath, a substantial amount of fixer would be required to counteract the lingering effects of the developer. When a stop bath is not accessible or chosen, thorough soaking in a water bath or frequent rinsing with water is necessary to ensure the complete removal of developer residue before fixing.
Ilfostop is formulated with an indicator dye that is pH-sensitive, changing color from yellow to purple as it becomes exhausted, serving as a visual cue for replacement. It is particularly recommended for dish and tray processing of paper or deep tank processing of film.
It’s important to note that Ilford recommends the use of protective gear such as gloves, eye protection, and an apron or overall when handling and mixing all chemicals.
Additional Notes:
– Ensure that the developer does not come into contact with the stop bath solution.
– Ilfostop concentrate has a shelf life of 5 years in fully airtight bottles and 12 months in half-full bottles with tightly capped lids.
– As a working solution, it remains fresh for 7 days.
– 500ml of Ilfostop concentrate can produce 10 liters of working solution.
– A full-strength working solution is capable of processing approximately 150 rolls of 135-36 or 120 films, 600 20.3×25.4cm (8×10″) RC prints, or 300 20.3×25.4cm (8×10″) FB prints.
