Optically, the lens features a 15-element, 10-group construction, including two aspherical elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements, helping reduce distortion and spherical aberration while delivering high contrast and sharpness across the frame, even wide open. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and allows for strong control over depth of field, while a rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth, pleasing bokeh.
Autofocus is handled by a fast, near-silent linear motor (LM), a notable improvement over the original version’s autofocus system, with an internal focusing design that keeps the lens barrel from extending during use. Unlike its predecessor, this version does away with the pull-back manual focus clutch, instead relying on a conventional manual focus ring. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.19m (7.48 in.), yielding a maximum magnification of 0.2x.
