The Metabones Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation) is an electronic lens mount adapter that lets photographers use Canon EF and EF-S lenses on full-frame and APS-C Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras with full electronic communication intact. It’s aimed at photographers and videographers who own Canon EF-mount glass and want to adapt it to a Sony body while retaining autofocus, aperture control, and image stabilization functionality rather than relying on a purely mechanical adapter.

At the core of the adapter is a high-performance 32-bit processor, enabling electronic contacts to transmit data between lens and camera for autofocus, auto exposure, image stabilization, aperture control from the camera body, and Exif metadata recording. It supports both phase-detect and contrast-detect autofocus on compatible Sony bodies, including phase-detect AF on the a7R II, a7 II, a6300, and a6500, along with AF-C tracking during high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10fps on the Sony A9. No optical elements are used, so the adapter does not alter a lens’s original focal length or introduce optical degradation.

Smooth, stepless iris (aperture) control is supported with recent Canon (2009+), Tamron SP-series (2013+), and Sigma (2016+) lenses, giving videographers cleaner exposure adjustments during recording. The adapter also supports 5-axis in-body image stabilization on compatible Sony bodies like the A7II, A7RII, and A7SII when the attached lens transmits distance information, and includes a dedicated switch to control in-body stabilization (IBIS) directly. A programmable Focus Hold button can be assigned to more than 50 different functions, such as Aperture Preview or Eye-AF, on supported Sony bodies.

Build quality includes a rubber gasket protecting the E-mount connection from dust and moisture, along with a status notification LED indicating the adapter’s current operation mode, image stabilization status, and communication state. The adapter is also compatible with the Sony PXW-FS7 Mark II video camera, and stores EXIF data for up to two manual lenses for photographers using non-electronic optics alongside their EF glass.
