Optically, the teleconverter is built from 7 elements in 4 groups, maintaining the optical quality of compatible NIKKOR lenses while fully supporting exposure metering and VR image stabilization. Full electronic communication between lens and camera is preserved, with the converter maintaining autofocus capability on compatible AF-S lenses, unlike older teleconverter designs that limited some shorter telephotos to manual focus only.
