The Polaroid Spectra 2 is an instant film camera introduced as part of Polaroid’s Spectra/Image System line, first launched in 1986, offering a larger, wider image format than Polaroid’s traditional square 600-series film. It’s built for casual photographers who want simple, automatic instant photography with a pop-up, fold-flat design for easy carrying.
Optically, the camera uses a patented Quintic lens, a three-element, 125mm f/10 plastic lens system with ten-zone sonar autofocus, focusing from 2 feet (0.6m) to infinity using Polaroid’s built-in sonar rangefinder, which sends sound waves to measure the distance to the subject closest to the center of the frame. An autofocus override is available for situations like shooting through glass that can confuse the sonar system. Exposure is fully automatic, calculated via a dual-filter silicon photodiode light meter (one cell measuring visible light, the other infrared for improved indoor flash exposures), with apertures ranging from f/10 to f/45 and shutter speeds from 1/245 to 2.8 seconds, plus an exposure compensation (lighten/darken) slider for manual adjustment.
A built-in programmed fill flash is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, with a rapid recharge time of 0.1 to 2.8 seconds and flash duration ranging from 1/3000 to 1/20,000 second, automatically beginning to charge whenever film is loaded or the camera is turned on. The Spectra 2 also includes a self-timer, a manual flash override, and a metric/imperial unit selector, along with an on/off switch for the camera’s audible beeps.
The camera uses Polaroid Spectra color instant film exclusively (ISO 600/29°, 10 exposures per pack), with automatic, motorized film advance and picture ejection; each print measures 4 x 4.06 inches overall, with an actual image area of 3.60 x 2.90 inches. Power for all camera functions comes from a fresh 6-volt battery integrated into each film pack, eliminating the need for separate camera batteries. Build quality centers on a compact, fold-flat body with a rubberized covering, measuring approximately 6.82 x 5.46 x 3.07 inches (17.3 x 13.87 x 7.78cm) and weighing approximately 1 lb. 12.5 oz. (0.8kg) without a film pack.
