Its 50mm focal length is ideally suited for portraiture, landscapes, reportage, and street photography, with a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture that excels in low light while achieving shallow depth of field and strong subject-background separation.

Optically, the lens is built from 14 elements in 11 groups, using the latest optical design technology to incorporate three aspherical elements and one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element, effectively suppressing astigmatism, field curvature, and other aberrations that can’t be corrected in-camera. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes flare and ghosting, and a rounded 11-blade diaphragm produces large, pleasing bokeh at a 46.8-degree angle of view.

Autofocus is handled by Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA), the first lens in the Art line to adopt this linear-motor system, delivering fast, smooth, and nearly silent focusing for both stills and video, along with excellent tracking performance that holds up for dark environments, moving subjects, and handheld video work. Handling includes a focus mode switch, along with an aperture ring featuring both a click/de-click switch and a lock switch, giving photographers direct, tactile exposure control along with silent aperture adjustment for video work, plus a customizable AFL button for assigning camera functions.

Build quality combines aluminum and Sigma’s Thermally Stable Composite material, with a dust- and splash-resistant structure and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element, along with a durable brass bayonet mount. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 17.7-17.8 in. (45cm), yielding a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:6.8 (0.147x magnification), and accepts a 72mm filter thread. It measures approximately 78.2 x 109.5mm and weighs approximately 670g, remaining notably compact and light for an f/1.4 lens of this focal length.
