The optical formula incorporates 17 elements in 12 groups, integrating two Extra Refractive (XR) elements, three Low Dispersion (LD) elements, three glass-molded aspherical elements, and one hybrid aspherical element. This complex optical arrangement suppresses axial chromatic aberrations, spherical distortion, and coma across the focal throw. Optical surfaces are treated with both eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings to suppress flare and ghosting under harsh backlighting. CONDITION DIAGNOSTICS & PHYSICAL NOTES

Exterior & Barrel Status: VERY ROUGH / HEAVILY USED CONDITION. The metal barrel chassis, zoom ring, manual focus ring, switch array plate, and hood show pronounced signs of extensive, hard field use. The outer barrel exhibits widespread, heavy scratches, finish abrasions, paint loss, and edge scuffing throughout the metal housing. The rubberized zoom and focus grip bands show cosmetic handling wear and surface smoothing, though they remain securely seated on the barrel. All printed focal length markings and switch labels remain legible.
Optical Status: POOR / AS-IS OPTICAL CONDITION. The external front glass element exhibits four (4) distinct physical scratches. In addition, internal inspection reveals visible fungal growth located behind the front optical group. Under controlled bench evaluation and standard test shooting, these flaws do not directly render into final captured images under typical working apertures; however, the presence of internal fungus and front element gouges represents significant optical wear that may soften extreme micro-contrast in severe backlighting. BBAR and eBAND multi-coatings remain present on unaffected surfaces.
Mechanical & Electronic Status: FULLY FUNCTIONAL. Despite heavy exterior and optical wear, the lens functions properly; the internal Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor acquires focus swiftly, accurately, and quietly; full-time manual focus override turns with smooth mechanical travel; the zoom ring extends and retracts across the entire 24-70mm focal range; the 5-stop Vibration Compensation (VC) system engages and steadies the viewfinder image across both Mode 1 and Mode 2; the physical zoom lock switch latches properly at 24mm; the rounded 9-blade diaphragm stops down crisply without sticking; gold-plated Nikon F-mount electronic contacts communicate Exif data and aperture control to host Nikon DSLRs and FTZ mirrorless adapters without error codes.
