As the successor to the acclaimed original Zoom H1, it’s built around a redesigned control layout for simpler, faster operation.
At its core, the H1n uses built-in 90-degree X/Y stereo microphones to capture natural, phase-coherent stereo sound, supporting up to 24-bit/96kHz audio in BWF-compliant WAV format or a variety of MP3 formats ranging from 48 kbps to 320 kbps. An advanced onboard limiter enables distortion-free recording up to 120 dB SPL, while Auto-Level automatically sets appropriate gain, and a low-cut filter helps eliminate pops and unwanted low-frequency rumble.
Handling centers on one-touch button controls placed directly on the front of the recorder for quick access to record, playback, stop, and track navigation functions, along with dedicated buttons for sample rate/resolution, low-cut filter, limiter on/off, and auto-level settings. A newly designed 1.25-inch monochrome LCD display remains easy to read in virtually any lighting condition, including bright direct light. Additional features include Auto-Record, Pre-Record, and Self-Timer functions, a slate/tone generator for simplifying A/V sync in filmmaking workflows, and Playback Speed Control, Voice Emphasize Filter, and Stereo Bounce functions for added flexibility.
Connectivity includes a 3.5mm stereo Mic/Line input for connecting an external microphone or audio source, and a 3.5mm stereo headphone/line output with dedicated volume control. The recorder saves audio to microSD or microSDHC cards (up to 32GB), and a high-speed USB 2.0 port allows for fast file transfer to a computer as well as class-compliant USB audio interface functionality, letting the H1n double as a USB microphone. Power comes from two standard AAA batteries, rated for up to 10 hours of continuous operation, with an optional AC adapter also supported.
