The Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared) is a compact, infrared wireless shutter release designed for select Nikon cameras, letting photographers trigger the shutter without physically touching the camera. It’s recommended for photographing subjects that are difficult to approach, or for minimizing vibration during close-up work and long time exposures where any camera movement could blur the shot.
The remote transmits an infrared signal up to approximately 16 feet (4.87m) in front of the camera, aiming the transmitter at the camera’s infrared receiver to trigger the shutter; it can also be used from behind the camera, though at a reduced range. Two shooting modes are available: immediate release, where the shutter fires as soon as the ML-L3’s button is pressed, and delayed remote mode, where the shutter fires approximately two seconds after the button is pressed, giving the photographer time to step fully out of frame or settle the setup. On many compatible cameras, the remote also supports mirror-up shooting, where a first press raises the mirror and a second press releases the shutter, helping reduce blur caused by mirror-slap vibration.
The ML-L3 supports bulb exposure, useful for extended low-light or creative daylight long-exposure photography: in M (manual) exposure mode with the shutter speed set to “- -“, pressing the remote’s shutter-release button opens the shutter, which then remains open (for up to a maximum of 30 minutes) until the button is pressed a second time to close it. Nikon recommends using a fully charged battery or an optional AC adapter when shooting extended bulb exposures to avoid running out of power mid-shot.
Build quality is compact and lightweight, measuring approximately 60 x 7 x 28mm and weighing just 10g, making it easy to carry in a pocket or camera bag. It’s powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium battery, rated for a typical battery life of up to three years or approximately 20,000 exposures. The ML-L3 is compatible with a range of Nikon DSLR, COOLPIX, and Nikon 1 cameras equipped with an infrared receiver; photographers should confirm compatibility with their specific camera model before use.
