The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is a professional-grade telephoto zoom lens designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, offering an 80-300mm full-frame-equivalent field of view in a compact, weather-sealed body. As the first telephoto lens in Olympus’s M.Zuiko PRO lineup, it’s well suited to sports, wildlife, and events, pairing naturally with higher-end weather-sealed OM-D bodies like the E-M1 Mark II.
Optically, the lens is built from 16 elements in 10 groups, including one aspherical ED element, two additional aspherical elements, one Super ED element, three ED elements, and one high-refractive-index element, working together to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations, distortion, and color fringing while delivering strong sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. A rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth, natural background blur, and the lens maintains a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture across the entire 40-150mm range.
Autofocus is handled by an industry-first Dual VCM (Voice Coil Motor) system, delivering fast, precise, and quiet focusing performance well suited to both stills and video. Internal focusing keeps the 72mm filter thread from rotating, making the lens convenient to use with graduated or polarizing filters, and a Manual Focus (MF) clutch lets photographers instantly switch to manual focus by sliding the focus ring back. A programmable L-Fn (lens function) button adds further direct, customizable control.
Build quality centers on a premium, largely metal construction with 11 separate seals protecting against dust, splashes, and freezing temperatures, giving the lens genuine professional durability in the field. A removable, rotating tripod collar is included for balanced support and quick switching between horizontal and vertical orientations. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.7m, yielding a maximum magnification of 0.21x (0.42x 35mm-equivalent), and weighs approximately 760g without the tripod adapter or 880g with it attached. It does not include optical image stabilization, relying instead on in-body stabilization on compatible Olympus/OM System camera bodies.
The lens is compatible with Olympus’s optional MC-14 1.4x teleconverter, extending the effective range to 112-420mm equivalent, or the MC-20 2x teleconverter, extending reach to 160-600mm equivalent.
As a Micro Four Thirds-specific lens, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO is designed exclusively for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras from Olympus/OM System, Panasonic, and other Micro Four Thirds alliance manufacturers.
