The Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is Sony’s original standard zoom lens for APS-C E-mount mirrorless cameras, launched alongside the very first NEX system in 2010 and commonly bundled as a kit lens with Sony’s compact APS-C bodies. It covers a versatile everyday focal range delivering a 27-82.5mm equivalent field of view, spanning wide-angle through short-telephoto framing well suited to general photography, travel, and everyday snapshots.

Optically, the lens covers its 18-55mm range with a variable maximum aperture of f/3.5 at the wide end narrowing to f/5.6 at full telephoto, an intentionally modest aperture range chosen to keep the lens’s size and weight to a minimum. The 11-element, 9-group optical construction includes several aspherical elements to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations, and a rounded 7-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth, natural background rendering.

Autofocus is handled by an internal stepper motor, delivering smooth, quiet focusing well suited to both stills and video, along with Sony’s Quick-Shift AF (Direct Manual Focus) system, letting photographers simply rotate the focus ring to instantly switch to manual focus without a separate switch. The lens includes Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilization, rated to compensate for up to four stops of camera shake, and can be combined with a compatible camera body’s own sensor-shift stabilization for more effective shake correction.

Build quality includes an aluminum alloy outer barrel over a plastic inner barrel and a metal lens mount, giving the lens a solid, robust feel despite its light weight of approximately 194-214g. It uses a rotary, extending zoom design, meaning the barrel physically lengthens as the lens is zoomed toward 55mm, and it does not include weather sealing. The lens has a close minimum focusing distance of 0.24-0.25m, yielding a maximum magnification of approximately 0.3x, and accepts 49mm filters, shipping with a removable, reversible petal-shaped lens hood.
