The Polaroid Land Camera J66 is a Type-40 instant roll-film camera produced by Polaroid between 1961 and 1963, notable historically as the roll-film model that introduced the folding scissor-strut assembly and shutter release button design later carried over into Polaroid’s pack-film cameras. It sold roughly 900,000 units at a retail price of $89, making it a popular consumer instant camera during the final years of Polaroid’s roll-film era.
Optically, the J66 uses a 114mm f/19 (or f/14.5, depending on source) single-element meniscus plastic lens, paired with a pneumatic rotary shutter operating from 1/15 to 1/1000 second. Exposure is fully automatic, controlled by a selenium light cell, with no manual exposure control available on the camera. A built-in, hinged tilt-out flashgun accepts AG-1 flashbulbs and can be rotated and pivoted to provide either direct or bounce flash.
The J66 was designed exclusively for use with Polaroid’s discontinued Type 47, 3000-speed black-and-white roll film; a color adapter kit (#660) was later made available for the camera. Because this roll film is no longer produced, some collectors have adapted the camera to accept modern 120 roll film using custom spool adapters, though this is not the camera’s intended configuration and results can vary.
Handling follows Polaroid’s classic folding roll-film camera design, using a scissor-strut bellows mechanism that collapses for storage and extends for shooting, a design that would carry forward conceptually into Polaroid’s later pack-film cameras. As with all roll-film Polaroid Land cameras, exposed photos required a print coater (typically included with period camera kits) to help preserve and protect the finished prints after development.
