The Polaroid Spectra 2 is a wide-format instant film camera from Polaroid’s Spectra/Image series, designed to produce larger prints than standard square-format Polaroid cameras of its era. It’s part of a lineup thought to deliver higher-quality images than conventional 600-series Polaroid cameras, thanks to a more sophisticated internal lens arrangement and a proportionally larger print area.
At the core of the Spectra 2 is a Quintic 125mm f/10, three-element plastic lens, with apertures ranging from f/10 to f/45 and shutter speeds from 1/245 to 2.8 seconds. Rather than adjusting the distance between internal lens elements like earlier Polaroid designs, the Spectra series uses an arc-shaped range of focusing lenses that swing across the exterior lens element to achieve focus, paired with sonar (ultrasound) autofocus for automatic distance metering. The camera also includes an automatic light meter for exposure and a self-timer. Within the broader Spectra lineup, the Spectra 2 is distinguished by including exposure adjustment (lighten/darken control) as one of its user-accessible settings.
The camera uses Polaroid Spectra color film exclusively, which develops within seconds of ejection and comes in packs of 10 exposures; the camera automatically shifts into end-of-pack (EOP) mode once a pack is exhausted. Prints have an outer border of 4 x 4.06 inches with an image area of 3.60 x 2.90 inches, notably wider than the square format of standard 600-series Polaroid film, and the film has a speed of approximately ISO 600/29°.
Film advance and picture ejection are both automatic, motorized functions, simplifying operation after each shot. The camera measures approximately 6.82″ x 5.46″ x 3.07″ and weighs about 1 lb 12.5 oz without a film pack, and includes a built-in automatic flash.
